| It
does not suggest as in the title the visit of Dante, but in reality
Böcklin's daughter who died twelve months old, in 1877, and
was buried in the English cemetery on piazza Donatello in Florence,
which would have suggested to the painter his famous Island of
the Dead (evoked in the oppressive vegetation which covers the
tomb). This reflection on the dead child who probably initiated
one of the greatest masterpieces, required a treatment as serene
as possible. |
